“Nigeria is heading towards implosion, disintegration” – Former CBN deputy governor.

A former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr Obadiah Mailafia yesterday said the insurgency in northern Nigeria was fast turning the country into a failed state.

He said Nigeria could implode and disintegrate if the delicate and dangerous path is not reversed through holistic management by government.

Speaking at the 10th anniversary of the German Konrad Adenuaer Stiftung (KAF) Foundation in Nigeria held in Abuja, Mailafia said “The current insurgency is the most dangerous since the civil war. We cannot take the existence of this country for granted. If it continues in this fashion, there will be implosion and it will disintegrate. That will be a great pity for our neighbors in Africa who look up to us for leadership.”

The former CBN chief who is the Chef de Cabinet of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of countries (ACP) based in Brussels, Belgium said Nigeria was beginning to manifest symptoms of a failed state, “the only thing that has kept the country together is restraint.”

According to him, the Boko Haram group appears not to be acting alone given that some of their campaigns involved the use of expensive cars for suicide mission. “I suspect that some people who said they will make the country ungovernable may know something about it,” he said.
